We arrived in the late afternoon.
The land had already begun to change before it appeared.
The air felt heavier.
Damp.
The ground held water longer than it should.
Then the fort revealed itself.
Not rising.
Not imposing.
Just… there.
A boundary that had decided to remain.
The walls were lower than I expected.
Stone darkened by moisture.
Wood that had begun to soften with time.
It did not feel like something built to resist.
It felt like something built to watch.
The gate was open.
But we were stopped before it.
Only briefly.
A few soldiers stepped forward.
Questions kept short.
Their eyes moved past us quickly.
Then slowed.
Toward Caravan Master.
There was a pause.
Not hesitation.
Recognition.
We were not held after that.
But before we passed through—
I noticed movement above the walls.
At first, only one.
Still.
Half-hidden.
Then another.
Then more.
They had been there the entire time.
Watching.
If I had not looked twice,
I would have missed them completely.
Cloaks the color of stone and moss.
They did not move like soldiers.
They did not need to.
As we approached the gate,
someone stepped forward from within.
A figure in a hooded cloak.
The movement was light.
Controlled.
They bowed slightly.
“Master Eldar.”
Caravan Master nodded once.
“Warden.”
Nothing more was said.
And yet—
something had already been understood.
We were led inside.
The air did not change much.
Still damp.
Still heavy.
The scent lingered.
Wet wood.
Old timber.
Not decay.
But something close to it.
There were people here.
Not many.
Some in uniform.
Most not.
They sat along the inner walls.
Cleaning tools.
Speaking quietly.
At a glance,
it felt unguarded.
But it was not.
The watching never stopped.
I noticed them again.
The ones above.
And the ones below—
moving in ways that did not draw attention.
They were not placed.
They were already where they needed to be.
Ryn walked beside me.
As she always did.
Unchanged.
We followed behind Caravan Master.
Further in.
Toward wherever this report would be given.
I looked back once.
The gate remained open.
The road behind us still visible.
And beyond it—
the land we had crossed.
Ahead,
the air thickened further.
The swamp waited somewhere beyond this place.
But this was not a wall against it.
Not something that held it back.
Only something that watched the space between.
I turned forward again.
Someone passed close to us.
A warden.
Cloak drawn back just enough.
For a moment—
I saw their face clearly.
Sharp features.
Calm expression.
Ears not quite human.
There was something in the way they carried themselves.
Not distant.
But… complete.
I looked longer than I should have.
Ryn nudged my arm.
A small smile.
“We all react like that the first time.”
I looked away.
The moment passed quickly.
As most things seem to now.
We have arrived.
That is all.
